dosbox staging audio and performance

Using dosbox staging (flatpack/linux) and have some sound stuttering at certain times, it varies in frequency and intensity, It doesn't seem to be related to actual PO as gp2lap log files showed no evidence of slowdown. If I run htop in a terminal window my system is barely idling but the freezing and sound stuttering is intensified significantly with htop running. The menu music also stutters with digital artifacts.
I didn't have any of these problems with dosbox-ece, which I can't find a Linux version for, but running the windows version in wine doesn't present these problems. Dosbox-x is too slow for gp2.

Years ago I was able to compile dosbox-ece from scratch for linux. It worked, but I ended up using a dual boot computer with windows 7 instead. I use dosbox-x for ICR2 (it works well for icr2). I am still on dosbox-ece for GP2 myself.

ece got shut down and no Linux version seems to be available. Staging works OK but something seems off about it.
Did you use gp2edit on Linux also? I'm using it through wine but what I'm trying to do seems problematic, struggle to apply the carshape and all the menus vanish into thin air nothing but black screen saying 'file not found'. I'm suspecting gp2edit might not be patching the exe correctly or wine isn't handling it properly because I never had these issues on windows

I compiled it from source - so I made my own executable. I used to use gp2edit through wine and it worked OK for me. I think I was running Debian 8 at that time but honestly I forget.
I found it much easier to just use a dual boot system for all of my icr2/gp2 needs. I actually have a completely separate machine now that is almost exclusively just for icr2/gp2.

I was able to work through the problems, starting with a fresh install. Looks like everything's working as expected but the stuttering issue still remains. Its not too bad or frequent though. I still feel ece was better but they've killed it off and I can't find the Linux version anymore
